native brook trout from a small river in the rangeley region of maine

Fishing Report - August 16 2017

It is a great time to enjoy summer in the backcountry of western Maine. Sue and I spent our day off way up on the Kennebago and Cupsuptic rivers. The air temp never got above 62 degrees and the water was cold and at June flows. We enjoyed the road side berries at every stop. The rain from the weekend gave the rivers a boost in flow. The Magalloway is also staying cool at 57 to 62 degrees with flows remaining at the 600 or more cfs..My productive nymphs lately have been the wd -50 in size 18 and small size 18 tan caddis larva. The tan klinkhamer in size 16 has been a good top water choice. I guided some folks on the Rapid recently and though the water temps were around 70 we still had enough Salmon action to keep things interesting. The dog days of summer are at bay so make sure you take advantage of the good fishing.
