Purple Psycho Prince

Posted on March 01 2013

The prince is possibly the most effective and widely used attractor nymph in the world. When a new dubbing material called Ice-dub from Hareline was introduced, Mike Mercier from The Fly Shop in California knew he had to use it and looked for ways to incorporate it into some patterns. He created a fly called the Psycho Prince, a bright colored attractor that has borrowed some attributes of the famous white-winged prince nymph. Ice Dub is a very bright synthetic dubbing that can be used for all attractors and “hot spots” on the heavy Czech nymphs.  Mike took this new dubbing and the feeding triggers of the prince nymph and combined them into this new fly called the Psycho Prince. I used it last summer and had great results. I used purple, which is the most popular color, but plan on experimenting with other colors this summer. The feeding triggers borrowed from the prince are the white biot wings and forked tail. It also has a carapace, a dark back running the length of the fly, and a wire ribbing to create a segmented appearance. I tie them in sizes 12 – 16 and have purple in stock, but plan to add more colors soon. Give this attractor pattern a try next season and let me know how it works for you.
