maineflyshop "all purpose" emerger fly

A.P. Emerger

This month's fly is the A.P. Emerger. A.P. stands for all purpose. The pattern was created by Denny Rickard of Oregon in the early 90's. It was used for copying the Damsel fly nymph on stillwater. I use it as a top fly nymph in larger sizes. It works well for me in May and June. I use the olive color in larger sizes like 8 and 10. It is very effective on the Rapid during the time when stoneflies and dragon flies are moving around during pre hatch.

hook - 3x long heavy 8-12
thread - olive
tail - olive soft hackle fibers
body - olive dubbing
rib - copper wire brassie
thorax - peacock herl
wingcase - olive mallard flank
hackle - olive soft hackle

I love roll casting these on tight streams and letting them swing through.
I’m always amazed at the number of strikes that occur when I let it just hang for a few seconds at the end of the swing.
