Can there be a more important tool for tying flies then a tying vise? Unless you are Carrie Stevens or Lee Wulff you will need a vise to get started. While a vise in it's simplest form is just a way to hold a hook not all vises are the same. When we all start tying we will use an inexpensive vise. As we get better and demand more from our vise it becomes necessary to upgrade.
We carry a line of quality vises from Regal, Renzetti, HMH and DynaKing. Vises come in two designs: standard and rotary. A standard design holds the hook in a position that allows you to tie a fly from one side. A rotary vise allows you to rotate the fly so you can see all sides as you tie. A rotary vise also allows you to apply materials to the hook without moving the material by hand around the hook shank. While the three brands of vises we sell are all high quality and made in the U.S.A, they do have their differences so we recommend that you stop by the shop for a demonstration or give us a call.
There are many different tools that we use in tying flies. The basics list would include, scissors, bobbin, bodkin, threader, and tweezers. There are endless other tools invented to do certain tasks involved in fly tying. Once you have the basics you can add these tools as you need to. Discovering new tying methods and the tools that help you master them can be lots of fun. We carry tools made by Dr. Slick, Anvil, Griffin, Terra, Rite, Tiemco, Tyflyz, Stonfo, Renzetti and Hareline.
