The Story

The story of the Hebert Miner line of dry fly hackle begins in 1954 and evolves through the efforts of several key individuals who dedicated their skills to its development. The story begins with legendary fly-tier Harry Darby, who after many years of his own work, passed on some of his Darby hackle stock hatching eggs to Andy Miner, a meticulous Minnesota lawyer with a passion for fly tying.

Andy Miner, driven by patience and precision, embarked on a journey of careful breeding and selection. Through his experimentation and attention to detail, he created a superior strain of rooster hackle, doing his part in advancing the quality of dry fly hackle. By 1974, Ted Hebert, from Michigan, acquired the best of the Miner stock and continued the genetic selection process. Hebert, following Miner's example, refined the hackle further, improving its qualities and colors over the next two decades.

In 1997, Tom Whiting, Ph.D., President of Whiting Farms, took over the stewardship of this exceptional hackle gene pool. Whiting’s goal was to preserve the inherent qualities of the hackle while also refining it further, enhancing its characteristics and colors.

What you see today is the culmination of decades of care, genetic selection, and innovation from these dedicated individuals. The result is a dry fly hackle of extraordinary quality, carrying a rich legacy of craftsmanship and refinement.
