Holographic tinsel is a fantastic mylar material for adding both flash and movement to flies, making them more enticing to fish. It can be used in several ways, such as wrapping the bodies of nymphs and streamers, forming wing cases, backs, or tails, or serving as ribbing to create segmented and shimmering effects. Thanks to its reflective qualities, holographic tinsel works well for flies in both freshwater and saltwater environments—from small trout patterns like the Perdigone, Rainbow Warrior, and Lightning Bug to larger streamers for bass and panfish. On a spool, it is easy to handle.
Applications for fly bodies:
- Full body wraps: Cover the entire body of nymphs, streamers, or other patterns to produce a shiny, segmented appearance that mimics scales or insect bodies.
- Body segmentation: Layer it over a dubbing body to enhance flash and visual interest.
- Durability: Applying resin or head cement over the tinsel can make it more robust in the water, especially when used for body wraps, as the tinsel may become translucent when wet.
