Things are changing slowly here in the mountains but the upcoming warm weather should start to move the fishing season forward. The big news is that they started releasing more water from the Aziscohos and Middle Dams. This should move fish into the rivers. The water temps are still low in the 35-38 degree range, we need them to be closer to 40 to get things really moving. I took a drive around the top of Aziscohos lake today and found the roads pretty good but a bit muddy in places. The lake ice was mostly gone and the rivers running high. I would expect ice to leave Rangeley lake between the 3rd and the 6th of May. I have heard of smelt running in small numbers so that should pick up as water temps rise. Early morning just before dawn is the best time to catch fish that are feeding on spawning smelt. Use streamer patterns like Grey and Black Ghost.
Till next time,
Brett
