This month's fly is the Nancy's prayer. The Nancy's Prayer was created by Eddy Reif of Bangor Maine. It is the emerger match for the West Branch caddis dry fly pattern. It is used first on the West Branch of the Penobscot river in northern Maine. The fly was named after Nancy Pray who was the co owner of Pray's Campground at the Big Eddy on the West Branch.
It is hard to classify this pattern as it can represent a Caddis fly as an emerger or spinner. Many times when you see bugs in the air but don't seem to be hooking many on a dry, they actually could be feeding on the dying bugs as they lay helpless on the surface. That is when the Nancy's Prayer will catch fish for you. It will also work fished like an emerger during a hatch. Let the fly swing across the current with a down stream presentation and as it rises at the end of the swing it can imitate an emerging Caddis.
