Paralep Emerger

This month's fly is the Paralep or Blue Quill C.D.C. Emerger. I first used this pattern a couple of years ago on a spring fishing trip to the Beaverkill River in the Catskills. I like to visit Dette's fly shop every trip to look for new patterns to try and bring home to use. It was still cool weather and water temps so I wouldn't show up at the river till around two in the afternoon and look for hatching mayflies. When I saw a rising fish I would get in position above the riser and cast. They would usually take the fly on the first cast. This pattern was my best producer pre-hatch or just as the hatch would begin before the feeding fish switched to the free floating duns.

Hook - size 16-14 Klinkhamer

Thread - Veevus 16/0 brown

Shuck - brown antron

Body - Cinnamon or mahogany dubbing

Wing - 4 natural C.D.C. feathers
