The Pheasant Tail nymph is undeniably one of the most effective nymph patterns of all time.  It can imitate mayflies to stoneflies and anything in between. It can be tied in many different styles that can copy a variety of insect life stages. You can add beads, flash or soft hackles that drape around the body.
