Please come and join us as the Rangeley Region Sport Shop presents author, historian and tying instructor Leslie Hilyard for a day of instruction in classic featherwing streamers. On February 22, we will be tying Carrie Stevens iconic "Gray Ghost" and also James "Bud " Wilcox's "Kennebago Smelt", and if time allows, we will also tie Herb Welch's gorgeous "Golden Knight".
In tying the "Gray Ghost" students will learn the Stevens Method of streamer construction, which produces flies so durable that they may be fished for decades. In contrast to this, students will be learning the more casual and common Eastern Streamer method in tying Wilcox’s Kennebago Smelt. "Bud" developed this streamer over many years during his guiding career in the Kennebago Wilderness. These are two vastly different methods producing two complete opposite featherwing streamers that are both prolific producers. Herb Welch's "Golden Knight" utilizes several techniques used in classic Atlantic Salmon flies and is one of the most beautiful patterns in his repertoire.
Students must bring their own vises and tools including two bobbins loaded with white and black 6/0 thread. All other materials will be provided by the instructor. Some fly tying experience is highly recommended. We hope you will join us!
