The Hairwing Dun was created by Rene Harrop of Idaho in the 1980's. The story goes that he was fishing the Firehole River during a good Caddis hatch but couldn't match the fly. So he trimmed down a Elk Hair caddis and began catching fish. This pattern is in my mayfly line up but isn't pulled out until all the usual patterns have been used up. The tail is split and splayed out. The under part of the hackle is cut in a 'V' . This gives an impression of feet touching down on the water.
