The zebra midge is this month’s fly. The midge insect is perhaps one of the most important food sources for trout and salmon. This small insect is a member of Diptera family and is present in the water 365 days a year. It becomes all the more important as a food source in late season fishing because there isn’t much else around. The zebra midge can be fished deep in tandem with another nymph or as a dropper beneath a dry. It is tied in an assortment of colors and bead types. At the shop we sell them in small sizes from 16 – 20, with size 20 being my favorite. The original color was black, but red is the most effective color for me. Try it this fall and see what happens.
