high water on the kennebago river

Fishing Report - May 18 2017

It has been a week of extremes here in the mountains. On Sunday we had a nice little snow storm and today it is in the mid 80's. We received 2 1/2 to 3 inches of rain over the week end and that has put the flow levels up again. The undammed  water has come down to fishable levels and will continue that way unless we get more rain. The Magalloway and Rapid remain high. The Rapid is too high to bother with while you could fish the Mag. if you work the edges and quiet water. The temp at the Mag today was still a cold 43 degrees while most other water is in the high 40's.  Bug activity usually starts when water temps get to 48 to 50 degrees. Hendrickson mayflies and green bodied caddis are the first bugs to show up. The Klinkhamer emerger  is the best fly to us for these early emerging insects. Other patterns include parachute Adams, deer hair caddis and Henryville Special. The Black and Gray Ghost should be close at hand as the fish are still looking for smelt also. Conditions will change quickly in the coming week so be ready and to hit the water when thing pick up. Don't forget the bug dope, I saw the first black flies today.
