Rangeley Region Fishing Report - Sept. 9 2022

Change is in the air here in the mountains this week. The cool and cloudy weather of last week - end has lowered water temps and moved the fish up some rivers. I have had two good mornings this week fishing on my own and have caught some nice brookies. The flow in the rivers is still good although we could use a shot of rain to keep things fresh. Water temps are in the 55-65 degree range but this can change with the warmth predicted for the week end. The Rapid should begin to cool down and fish well through the fall. The Magalloway drops off this time of year but should still be tried by those new to the area. When fish first move up a river they will take smelt patterns but after a few days they will switch to bugs or attractors. Everyone should have leeches and other black flies. The hornberg is a great fall fly that you can twitch on top of the water then pull under to fish like a streamer. Don't forget ants and hoppers.

There are many different methods people use when fall fishing and many work but if you really want to have a good time you need to learn how to use small midge flies. Most have experienced those times on a river in the fall when big fish are swirling on the water surface with no noticeable bugs in the air. They are eating those tiny midges that we can't see and don't want to admit exist. It is much easier to keep chucking buggers then to deal with small tippet and flies.

It's time to make your fall trip plans and get out on the water. If we can be of any help just stop by the shop.

Till next time

Brett
