After a hot summer-like week we are back to seasonable weather. Water temps have moved in the 60 degree range but shouldn't go much higher with the cooler weather forecasted. Flows are normal for this time of year but the tailwaters are a bit high. The sucker spawn is over. Today I saw a real assortment of bugs on the river with large Caddis and March Browns being the most abundant. The large Caddis are cased Grannoms and can be copied with a Pat's Rubberleg nymph. The March Browns are best copied by a number 12 tan Klinkhamer emerger.Smaller mayflies like the Hendrickson are best imitated by the Parachute Adams in whatever size matches the natural. You should always be looking around for rising fish to determine if dry flies should be used, however, sometimes they will take a dry even if no fish are showing. A developed skill of observation can teach a fisherman much about how to find success and great satisfaction in fly fishing. The biting insects are out in full force so be prepared.
Till next time,
Brett
