brown owl at a maine fly shop

This month's fly is the Brown Owl. The Brown Owl was created by Bob Broad of Wentworth location New Hampshire. He ran a fly shop just over the Maine border along the Magalloway River. I believe the pattern was originally created to copy the large Stoneflies that hatched along the Magalloway and Rapid rivers. It is also a very good imitation for Dragon flies and Drake mayflies. Ours are tied for us by Ken Grimes who was Instructed how to tie it by Bob Broad many years ago.

Hook - long shank streamer size 4-10
Thread - brown
Body - gold tinsel
Throat - Gray bucktail
Wing - Teal flank feather
Hackle - Grizzly soft hackle
